The exhibition was an outstanding success and was remarkable for the bringing together of many scarce bookplates from archives, libraries and private collections.

Although the French have always been in the frontline of bookplate collecting, this classic account was in fact written by an Englishman. Includes chapters on identification and classification, several chapters of examples, ecclesiastical and scholastic bookplates, medical bookplates, canting arms and punning plates, lists of artists and engravers, and a bibliography. This is 1/750 copies in the standard edition, another 38 copies on larger paper were also printed. Title-leaf with small tear, interior partly with very light foxing.
